Dykstra says shipbuilding procurement process fair and open

Still plenty of opportunity for local shipyard jobs

St. Catharines – Member of Parliament Rick Dykstra says although there is understandable disappointment at yesterday’s announcement that two major shipbuilding contracts did not come to St. Catharines, there is every reason to be optimistic about the future of our local shipyard.

“I’m proud of Seaway Marine and Industrial and everything they have done to qualify and prove they are among the best in the country”, said Dykstra. “I’m also proud of the tendering process, which the fairness commissioner said was the cleanest tender he has ever overseen. This had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with fairness.”

The National Shipbuilding Strategy will result in the creation of thousands of new jobs and billions in economic growth in cities and communities all across Canada. Industry analysts have estimated government ship projects would contribute indirectly and directly 15,000 jobs and over $2 billion in annual economic benefit over the next 30 years.
